Hi Room 19 Parents,
As we talked about at Back to School Night, I will begin encouraging your child to be more independent as they approach 5th grade. We will still write all of their homework down daily in their planner but I will not be using this website to write out the homework.
I will use this page as a curriculum guide so you can see what we are working on in each subject so you can see our learning focus.
We are continuing to work on determining the main idea of a text passage and identifying key details that support the main idea. We continue to work on summarizing and the criteria that your child should be focusing on should be the following:
1. Reading the text with purpose
2. Identifying important events/details. We are working on the difference between interesting and important details.
3. Using transition words to connect thoughts.
4. Retelling the events in order.
We are beginning our unit on fractions. We are working on finding equivalent fractions with either visual models such as number lines or fraction tiles. We are also working on simplying fractions too.
We are working on our study of electricity. We are using Mystery Science, our Science textbook, lab experiments to learn about circuits, static electricity and energy sources.
We will be starting our informational report writing about missions within the next few weeks.
2nd quarter ends on Friday, January 18th. Report cards will be coming home on January 25th but hopefully you have been reviewing the weekly progress reports with your child so there won't be any surprises.
